A Michael John Academy Advanced Apprenticeship means you will be employed and earning in a salon whilst you are learning. As well as taking advanced qualifications in Hairdressing you will also be assessed on key skills that are essential for a successful career in the industry.
Your training programme will be planned to suit your individual needs and structured to enable you to attend a Michael John Academy training centre for one day per week and your salon of employment four days per week. (Or those days agreed within your contract of employment)
As you progress you will develop the skills & knowledge required to become a competent, fully qualified and successful advanced stylist. You will build an impressive portfolio demonstrating your skills in the following areas:
In college you will receive half a day practical training and half a day theory training.
In your practical class you will be observed doing practical tasks for each unit and will also do two theory tests for each unit you complete.
You will be assessed against the National Standards leading towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
Every learner follows their Individual Learning Plan which is reviewed on a 6 weekly basis throughout training. Reviews are carried out alternately within your training centre or salon placement.
During the 12 weekly visits to your salon, we will discuss how you are progressing (both in work and in training), how you are enjoying the programme and agree targets to be completed.
On successful completion your training plan, you will achieve accreditation in:-
City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing
City & Guilds Key Skills Level 2 Communication
City & Guilds Key Skills Level 2 Application of Number

Michael John Academy Certificates – accrediting your individual strengths in aspects of personal effectiveness
You will have had the opportunity to participate in our Annual Hair & Beauty Competition and attend North West Hair & Beauty Exhibitions.
All the products and materials you will need are provided within our training centres FREE OF CHARGE.
To support your learning Michael John Academy has fully equipped learning suites which offer computer access; learner libraries; specialist literacy and numeracy delivery and much more.
You will be employed by your salon and will receive at least the National Minimum Wage. This is £2.60 per hour for apprentices aged 16 – 18 or in the first year of your apprenticeship; and the National Minimum Wage for your age group following this.
Michael John Academy can provide you with an Arriva bus pass at a cost of £11 per week.
Most apprentices continue to be employed in their salon as a fully qualified stylist. Some stylist apply to work in a different setting, such as on cruise ships or in television studios.
