A Michael John Academy apprenticeship means you will be employed and earning in a salon whilst you are learning. As well as taking qualifications in Barbering you will also cover key skills that are essential for a successful career in the Industry.
Your training programme will be planned to suit your individual needs and generally structured to enable you to attend a Michael John Academy training centre for one day per week and your salon of employment four days per week. (Or those days agreed within your contract of employment).
As you progress you will develop the skills & knowledge required to become a competent, fully qualified and successful barber. On course completion you will also have built an impressive portfolio demonstrating your skill in the following areas:
In college you will receive half a day practical training and half a day theory training.
In your practical class you will be observed doing practical tasks for each unit you are doing and will also do two theory tests on each unit you complete.
Your assessment will be against National Standards leading towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
Each learner will be given an individual learning plan which will be reviewed on a 6 weekly basis throughout the training. Reviews will be carried out alternately within your training centre and salon.
During the 12 weekly visits to your salon, we will assess how you are being treated, coping with your work and that you are enjoying the programme.
You will also have had the opportunity to participate in our Annual Hair & Beauty Competition and/or attend North West Hair & Beauty Exhibitions.
All the products and materials you will need are provided within our training centres FREE OF CHARGE
To support your learning Michael John Academy has fully equipped salons, learning suites which offer computer access, learner libraries, specialist literacy and numeracy delivery and much more.
Payment: you will be employed by the salon and will receive at least the National Minimum Wage. This is £2.50 per hour for apprentices aged 16 – 18 or in the first year of your apprenticeship; and the National Minimum Wage for your age group following this.
Michael John Academy can provide you with an Arriva bus pass at a cost of £11 per week.

Michael John Academy Certificates which accredit your individual strengths in aspects of personal effectiveness
City & Guilds Key Skill certificate Communication Level 1
City & Guilds Key Skill certificate Application of Number Level 1
HABIA Apprenticeship FRAMEWORK Completion Certificate
You will have worked in your salon throughout your training and will therefore generally be offered the opportunity to work for their employer full time as a stylist.
